POSITION SUMMARY:

The Database Engineer is the owner of multiple relational databases, responsible for strategy, advancement, automation, and performance optimization within Amazon Web Services (AWS).  You are a master at deep diving into explain plans, identifying problematic queries and stored procedures, reducing IOPS.  As a member of the DevOps team, you’ll have a passion for automating boring activities, and implementing infrastructure as code.  This role will work closely with software engineering, providing detailed feedback to developers on code improvement strategies relating to the database.   

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS INCLUDE:

• Monitor and maintain system up time and performance in accordance with established SLAs.
• Provide feedback on code release impact on database performance in lower environments.
• Database performance and capacity analysis/tuning.
• Design and implement automated disaster recovery strategy within AWS.
• Collaborate closely with developers on code optimization.
• Recommend data strategy, structure, and tools for product performance.
• Assist building ESG/3rd Eye Enterprise Data Hub supporting customer facing and internal data analytics requirements.
• Expert knowledge of MySQL 5.x; working knowledge of Cassandra or similar NoSQL.
• Works as part of the DevOps Team supporting cloud deployment pipelines using Jenkins, Cloud Formation, Chef, Puppet, and other tools as appropriate.
• Support containerization technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, etc.

• Consult and act as subject matter expert (SME) for implementing data security (encryption at rest, data masking / anonymization).
• Able to write and maintain scripts such as Bash, PowerShell, and Python.
• Install, and maintain service alerting tools such as: Monit, DataDog, Grafana, Prometheus, and Elastic Search.
• Utilize source code revision control tools (such as GitLab) for source code management.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's Degree, or higher in Computer Science or a related field is preferred or equivalent experience.
• AWS Associate or greater certification.
• Oracle Certified Professional, MySQL 5.6 Database Administrator.
• ITIL v3 or v4.
• Strong Linux knowledge.
• Proven experience in database tuning and capacity management.
• Superb communication skills and adept proficiency at distilling complex concepts into tangible value-generating initiatives.
