Job Title:        Research & Development Engineer

What we’re looking for:


We are looking for an engineer who will be responsible for researching and developing technologies for use in retail (commercial) and industrial refrigeration system applications.  This work will include:

  • The engineering analysis of proposed components and systems
  • The design and development of prototype components, controls, and systems
  • The design and development of laboratory test stations and test procedures
  • The installation and testing of prototypes in the lab and in the field
  • The analysis data and the creation and presentation of reports
  • The dissemination of information on these technologies internally to other Hillphoenix departments, and externally to our customers, through written guidelines and presentations

This work will be performed in conjunction with other R&D Engineers, and Engineers from other departments.


What you’ll be responsible for in this role:


This position offers a variety of responsibilities.  The daily primary focus will vary with the individual’s desires, expertise, and current project requirements.  These efforts will include:

  • Design and development of new products and technologies for retail (commercial) and industrial refrigeration that meet industry and internal organizational requirements for cost effectiveness, accuracy, functionality, performance, and reliability
  • Thermodynamic, energy, and economic analysis of proposed components and systems
  • Selection and sizing of equipment and devices for experimental and prototype facilities
  • Development of piping and instrumentation drawings, and electrical and structural schematics both directly and/or through engineers and designers in other departments
  • Detailed investigation of refrigeration systems, components, and display cases
  • Establish and share best practices within the R&D group
  • Technology transfer of developed products and technologies to other departments
  • Programming of data acquisition and analysis systems
  • Comprehensive design of experiments and test matrices
  • Project manage the overall testing process for specific technologies as assigned
  • Analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of experimental data
  • Summarizing experimental results in reports and presentations
  • Supervise fabrication, installation, and assist in the start-up of prototype systems in the field
  • Support Marketing, Product Management, New Product Development Engineering, Inside Sales Engineering, Outside Sales, Product Engineering, Quality, and Production with design and application related guidance and technical information.
  • The creation of computer-based tools (MS Office Applications/VBA, C++, MATLAB) used by others to help them provide technical information required for the design or sale of our equipment.
  • Work with component vendors and Hillphoenix engineering teams to identify and incorporate design improvements into existing system designs
  • Support New Product Development (NPD) team with the design, testing, and launch of new equipment and platforms, and with idea generations, design, and deployment of productivity projects.
  • Requires capability of performing essential job functions in an established office under normal lighting and climate control tolerances, in indoor and outdoor lab environments with normal lighting for those environments, all with some exposure to plant or field environments with the presence of dust, fumes, noise, and fluctuating temperatures due to lack of climate control.
  • Other duties as assigned


What are the basic qualifications?


  • Master of Science degree (MS)  
  • 5+ years minimum research or laboratory experience with thermal systems including experience with test equipment selection, data acquisition, measurement devices, and data analysis, interpretation, and presentation.
  • 2+ years’ experience in the commercial or industrial refrigeration industry


What are the preferred qualifications?


  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or related field

Technical Competencies:

  • Experience with design, application and programming of data acquisition systems (National Instruments LabView preferred)
  • Experience with design, construction, and operation of experimental facilities or test stations
  • Experience with data analysis and presentation
  • Industry knowledge in the following areas:
    • Retail (commercial) and industrial refrigeration design
    • CO2 refrigeration systems
    • Hydrocarbon refrigeration systems
    • Ammonia refrigeration systems
  • Working knowledge of the following software programs:
    • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
    • AutoCAD, SolidWorks
    • National Instruments – LabView
  • Working knowledge of controls and a familiarity with PLC programming
  • Working knowledge in math, physics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics
  • Familiarity with:
    • Chemistry and material science
    • Computer modeling of thermal systems
    • CFD techniques and commercial software
    • Flow visualization techniques
    • Typical ERP systems

Education and Experience

  • Advanced Course Work in:
    • Thermodynamics
    • Heat transfer
    • Fluid mechanics
    • Refrigeration and Air Conditioning
    • Engineering Design
  • Formal problem-solving certification(s) preferred (Six Sigma, Shainin, DOE, Robust, etc.)
  • Continuous improvement methods and certifications preferred (Six Sigma, Lean, Value Stream Mapping, Process Documentation, etc.)


  • Willing and able to travel as necessary (approximately 5% to 10% of the time) for customer and supplier interactions, attending conferences and equipment shows, managing and observing new technology field tests, and observing equipment operating in the field.
