PDQ Inc, A Dover Company, is an operating company within our OPW Vehicle Wash Solutions (VWS) group.  VWS is a family of industry leaders, including PDQ Manufacturing Inc., Belanger Inc., Innovative Control Systems. PDQ is a pre-eminent provider of in-bay automatic wash systems.

 

PDQ is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer.  The successful candidate will be responsible for the mechanical design, development, and verification of market-leading products. This includes product specification, engineering analysis, concept generation, product design, test planning and execution, release to manufacturing, and deployment to the field.  This role also offers opportunities for technical leadership and project management.

Major Responsibilities/Activities
•    Initiate and lead the development of creative and innovative mechanical solutions for new products that meet the specified technical, regulatory, and market requirements.
•    Design complex integrated systems as well as critical mechanical components (static and dynamic) and generate design output in accordance with the NPD process.
•    Research emerging technologies and evaluate them for adoption into product designs.
•    Participate in defining project charters, product requirements, and technical specifications that result in the development of differentiated and successful products.
•    Collaborate with other departments (including Product Management, Sales, Marketing, Manufacturing, Purchasing, etc.) throughout the product development process.
•    Analyze and evaluate system designs using traditional engineering calculations, 3D solid modeling, Finite Element Analysis, simulation, and physical testing.
•    Evaluate designs based on material cost, assembly time, reliability, and quality to make design decisions that maximize value to OPW VWS and its customers.
•    Perform make vs buy analysis based on cost, quality, performance, manufacturing capabilities, business needs, and product strategies.
•    Initiate, conduct, and document cross-functional design reviews and reviews of make vs buy decisions.
•    Adhere to ISO 9001 quality processes and participate in their continual improvement.
•    Serve as a technical expert to both internal stakeholders and external customers.
•    Participate in a hands-on manner in the building of prototypes for design evaluation.
•    Contribute to the continual improvement of design processes and communication methods.
•    Participate in the creation and review of product documentation.
•    Identify potential product and design improvement opportunities and coordinate changes throughout the product lifecycle.
•    Provide engineering support to manufacturing and assembly teams.
•    Communicate with customers as required to understand their needs and/or address their technical issues.
•    Conduct all work assignments and duties in compliance with company safety standards and procedures.
 
Education Requirements
•    A Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering is required, and a master’s is a plus.
 
Experience Requirements:
•    5-10 years’ experience in machine design and applying manufacturing techniques to industrial or consumer products.
•    Strong organizational and time management skills.
•    Ability to work with minimal supervision, both individually and in teams.
•    Strong leadership, teamwork, and communication skills.
•    Project management experience is a plus.
•    Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
•    Comfortable giving technical presentations to cross-functional audiences and to senior management.
•    Ability to collaborate effectively with suppliers, customers, and internal teams.
•    Ability to work with internal and external customers to define and document requirements, address technical concerns, and provide project status.
•    Self-starter with a strong drive for continual improvement of self, products, and processes.
•    Proficiency with traditional design engineering principles leading to successful launch of products.
•    Extensive experience with 3D CAD and modeling systems. SolidWorks is preferred, and AutoDesk Inventor is a plus.
•    Proficient application of engineering drawing techniques is required.
•    Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
•    Experience with business-wide ERP software.  Oracle experience is a plus.
•    Experience with engineering analysis tools is beneficial, including finite element tools and simulation software.
 
Quality Responsibilities:
•    Conduct duties with an awareness and focus on continual improvement of products and processes.
•    Maintain a high level of awareness for quality problems and when found, act to prevent them from being a customer issue.
•    Initiate action to prevent the occurrence of any non-conformity relating to product, process, and quality systems.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to normal office conditions and usual office equipment like telephone, personal computer, reports, and files.  The employee will also be exposed to normal conditions of a manufacturing facility.   The employee will be regularly required to sit and talk or hear.  The employee will be required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and climb or balance and reach with hands and arms.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  The employee will frequently lift, carry, or otherwise move and position objects up to 30 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds.   When working on machinery, employees will bend, stoop and crouch on a regular basis and constantly move about to coordinate work.  The employee is required to regularly set up, adjust, assemble, control, test and operate machinery.
