Position Summary:

                                                                                            

The Design Engineer supports (i) engineering development of current and planned dispenser products throughout Project Lifecycle and (ii) sustaining for selected legacy products (iii) standing in for Project Leader (PL) where necessary.


This includes the creation of the mechanical / electrical related designs of dispenser products, and ensuring that adequate design documentation is prepared, update, and issued as required. Documentation must be kept secure, meet all legal requirements, with adequate back-up systems and control processes and procedures in place. (Items such as complete fuel dispenser designs, sheet metal components, castings, component part design, creation of bills of materials, with relevant assembly drawings as well as the creation of installation instructions, are all examples of the necessary types of design / documents which will be involved).

 

This is a Fixed Term Contract (FTC) role for 6 months with the potential to extend or become permanent.

 

Essential Functions:

 

This Design Engineer will have responsibility for assisting the Senior Design Engineer (SDE) / Project Leader (PL) in the design phase of a development project (NPD) using Pro-E. They will also be involved with supporting customers and manufacturing on new and existing products.  They will deputise for PL where and when necessary chairing meetings, design reviews and being point of contact for the Product Team. Products incorporate aspects of mechanical, electrical, electronics and hydraulics engineering.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • New Product Introductions (NPI) – Involved in new development projects from concept through to factory introduction within a structured product development framework utilising multi discipline teams in a concurrent engineering environment;
  • Development of new models & options within the existing product ranges to meet market demands under the guidance of product marketing;
  • Develop test plans in conjunction with the quality department:  arranging testing with outside agencies or carrying out in-house testing as required;
  • Cost Reduction Programs – work in conjunction with Purchasing Dept. on cost reduction initiatives and lead engineering derived cost reduction strategies
  • Work with suppliers / vendors on D.F.M. initiatives
  • Sustaining of existing product ranges –
  • Dealing with day to day production issues and queries from the shop floor;
  • Working on DFA initiatives together with manufacturing teams;
  • Validating and action engineering change requests;
  • Assisting PL with Quality Complaints (CCR’s);
  • Responding to field quality issues in timely manner;
  • Responsible for products being developed in accordance to the relevant industry standards;
  • Responsible for the release of new parts and designs through the engineering release process;
  • Responsible for the accuracy of information within the MRP system;
  • Estimating design workload in order to meet project and factory needs;
  • Give regular updates on the status of on-going projects to PL.

 

Candidate Experience and Qualification:

 

  • Engineering Degree in a related subject (Mechanical or Electrical Engineering) with experience in an engineering role of at least 3 years.
  • Able to design and work with Pro-Engineer and preferably some experience with other parametric products.
  • Recognise the importance of good practices with respect to modelling, assembling and creation of Pro-E drawings;
  • Knowledge and understanding of FEA;
  • Perform feasibility studies and create subsequent documentation;
  • Understanding of Problem Solving (e.g. 5W’s / 2C’s, Taproot, Ishikawa diagrams);
  • Experience of working to schedules developed via project planning packages ( e.g. MS Project);
  • Awareness of developing designs in ATEX certified equipment and relevant industry standards;
  • Ability to liaise effectively with internal departments;
  • Ability to prioritise workload to meet business objectives and deadlines;
  • Excellent written English, and an ability to describe technical subjects to ‘non-experts’ is essential in the creation of documentation;
  • Ability to meet deadlines, co-ordinate activities, and provide progress updates on a regular basis to PL;
  • Develop in-depth product knowledge (technical) of range of products;
  • Able to produce material suitability / specifications;
  • Able to determine related quality awareness and standards for all products;
  • Experience of DFM / DFA / FMEA & PPAP processes;
  • Liaise with purchasing on the effect of any design and the impact on the overall cost of the product;
  • Liaise with vendors to ensure design can be manufactured and supplied at the quality required;
  • Liaise with external Design Agencies on specific projects;
  • Provide support to the production dept. as required with new / sustaining design changes etc.
  • Develop the prototype testing and product build requirements;
  • Contribute to New Product Research with early design phase input with Marketing, Sales, Business Development;
  • Provide an input into CAD best practices or other design techniques;
  • Work on product development projects within European Product Engineering, tasking products though their complete life cycle, commencing with product specification, continuing through design and release of new products, and supporting these products throughout their life cycle.
  • Excellent PC literacy and knowledge of MS Office products required;
  • Good communication skills and ability to source information - must be an excellent communicator in both written and spoken form and exhibit confidence of dealing with people at all levels (knowledge of French language would be an advantage);
  • Understanding of Project Management methodology (Project Lifecycle) preferably APM or PRINCE² would be an advantage.
