Position Summary:

                                                                                            

As part of the DFS Graduate Program, the engineering department is recruiting for a Graduate Engineer based at their premises in Dundee, Scotland. The role is ideal for Electro-Mechanical Engineering students graduating in the summer of 2019 who want a challenging career being involved in Electro-Mechanical Design and cross functional activities throughout the Project Lifecycle. It is the intention for 2019, that the company’s graduate program will be accredited by the IMechE. Periodic reviews will take place between Graduate Engineer and Mentor / Supervisor over the full scheme (2 years).

 

The Graduate Engineer supports (i) engineering development of current and planned dispenser products throughout Project Lifecycle and (ii) sustaining for selected legacy products (iii) standing in for Design Engineers where necessary. This includes, but not limited to, the creation of the mechanical / electrical related designs of dispenser products, and ensuring that related design documentation is prepared, update, and issued as required. The Graduate will learn techniques such as regression analysis, problem solving, and concept selection in line with Lean manufacturing techniques (e.g. DFA/DFM and DFS).   

 

Essential Functions:

 

This Graduate Engineer will have responsibility for assisting the Design Engineers / Project Leader (PL) in the design and integration phase of a development project using Pro-E (Mechanical and Cable). They will also be involved with supporting customers and manufacturing on new and existing products.  Over time they will deputise for PL where and when necessary chairing meetings, design reviews and being point of contact for the Product Team. Products incorporate aspects of mechanical, electrical, electronics and hydraulics engineering. The key responsibilities will include:

 

  • Understanding engineering function and supporting other functions in the business through on-boarding program.
  • New Product Introductions (NPI) – Involved in new development projects from concept through to factory introduction within a structured product development framework utilising multi discipline teams in a concurrent engineering environment adhering to industry standards and regulations (e.g. ATEX);
  • Develop test plans in conjunction with the quality department:  arranging testing with outside agencies or carrying out in-house testing as required;
  • Over a period of time the Graduate Engineer will be:
  • Dealing with day to day production issues and queries from the shop floor;
  • Working on DFA initiatives together with manufacturing teams;
  • Validating and action engineering change requests;
  • Assisting PL with Quality Complaints (CCR’s);
  • Responding to field quality issues in timely manner;
  • Responsible for products being developed in accordance to the relevant industry standards;
  • Responsible for the release of new parts and designs through the engineering release process;
  • Responsible for the accuracy of information within the MRP system;
  • Estimating design workload in order to meet project and factory needs;
  • Able to provide regular updates on the status of on-going projects to PL.

 

Candidate Experience and Qualification:

 

  • Sound Electrical and Mechanical knowledge through education and related work experience;
  • Have a basic understanding and be able design using Pro-Engineer CAD system and the importance of good practices with respect to modelling, assembling and creation drawings / wiring schematics;
  • General appreciation of Problem Solving tools (e.g. 5W’s, Ishikawa);
  • Ability to prioritise workload to meet business objectives and deadlines;
  • Good written English, and an ability to describe technical subjects to ‘non-experts’;
  • Ability to work to deadlines;
  • Contribute to New Product Research with early design phase input with Marketing, Sales, Business Development;
  • Provide an input into the Engineering’s best practices and other design techniques;
  • Excellent PC literacy and knowledge of MS Office products required;
  • Good communication skills and ability to source information (secondary European language would be an advantage);
  • Engineering Degree in a related subject with work experience in an engineering role during time of study is an advantage. Degree in Mechatronics is preferred.
