Position information

Position Title:

Fabricator

Main position objectives

Fabrication operators produce parts from metal, plastic or other materials using and programming, Laser, press brake, plate rolls, saw and other equipment. FAB operators look at blueprints or plans to produce finished products, adjust the machine to control angle, speed, length, diameter, material feed and path of the cut. They make sure their machines are set up properly in order to produce a quality product. FAB operators use shear, punch, crimp and all types of equipment to get the job done in a timely and safe manner.

Position description – Tasks, responsibilities, competencies

  • Operate the Laser, Press brake bending machines, saw and other machinery used in the production process.
  • Programming of machine/software for projects, spares and special items.
  • Update PEP programming software with new drawings or revisions.
  • When running laser, press brake or any equipment in FAB area verify nesting, programs and setups are correct prior to running them on the machine, including correct materials, part numbers and quantities.
  • Train others on all equipment and programming.
  • Support continuous improvement in productivity, efficiency, quality and testing new production items.
  • Select and set up tool based on material type and thickness, load programs and set machine parameters to ensure optimal performance of the equipment.
  • Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms, legs and moving your whole body such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.  
  • Provide a great level of attention to detail and focus on the given task.
  • Good measurement and mathematical fraction/decimal conversion skills
  • Ability to distinguish material types including Aluminum, Steel & Stainless Steel.
  • Problem solving skills – FAB operators will need to know why machines are not at peak performance, how to increase output and how to fix errors.
  • FAB operators often work long hours doing repetitive movements. 
  • Strong Computer skills – recommended Microsoft Windows 8 or higher, CAD/CAM and Touch screen
  • Desire to grow through technical training, including off-site courses or seminars.
  • Monitoring of raw material inventory levels and work with others to optimize.
  • Ability to work with little supervision.  
  • Ability to multitask, use grinding tools, cutting tool, lift heavy items and lift raw material manually or using hoist.
  • Ability to read blueprints.
  • Operate forklift for loading/movement of raw materials.
  • Keep work area clean and organized.
  • Candidate must be a strong team player and must be reliable. 
  • Follow all safety rules, quality standards, company rules and policies.

Work Environment

Work in this position is both in an office and a factory floor environment, either locally or at a customer site.  While performing the duties of this job in a factory setting, the employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud and PPE may be required.
