Manual Machinist
Main position objectives
A machinist is a trained tradesperson with skills and knowledge to create tools, parts, and objects by operating
milling and drilling machines, grinders and lathes in a machine shop. Also known as a machinist or turner, uses a
manual lather machine to cut, sand, drill, face, knurl, and turn materials. They are responsible for calibrating the
machine and ensuring it operates properly, and they often start the crafting process.
Position description – Tasks, responsibilities, competencies
Machinists need to be able to set up and operate lathe machines to perform various machining
operations. By preparing the necessary cutting tools and loading materials into the lathe.
· Select appropriate tools, materials, and machining parameters.
· Adjusting machine controls and changing tool settings to keep dimensions within specified tolerances.
· Pay attention to tool settings and adjust controls to correct for variations.
· Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of lathe machines.
· Inspect finished products for defects and ensure they meet specifications.
· Train and mentor junior lathe operators.
· Support continuous improvement in productivity, efficiency, quality and testing new production items.
· Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms, legs and moving your whole body such
as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
· Provide a great level of attention to detail and focus on the given task.
· Good measurement and mathematical fraction/decimal conversion skills
· Ability to distinguish material types including Aluminum, Steel & Stainless Steel.
· Problem solving skills - Know why machines are not at peak performance, how to increase output and how to fix
errors.
· Machinist operators often work long hours doing repetitive movements.
· Strong Computer skills – recommended Microsoft Windows 8 or higher, CAD/CAM and Touch screen
· Desire to grow through technical training, including off-site courses or seminars.
· Ability to work with little supervision.
· Ability to multitask, use grinding tools, cutting tool, lift heavy items and lift raw material manually or using hoist.
· Ability to read blueprints or schematics as a guide to create the object.
· Operate forklift for loading/movement of raw materials.
· Keep work area clean and organized.
· Candidate must be a strong team player and must be reliable.
· Follow all safety rules, quality standards, company rules and policies.

Work Environment
Work in this position is both in an office and a factory floor environment, either locally or at a customer site.
While performing the duties of this job in a factory setting, the employee may be exposed to fumes or
airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment and job
sites can be loud and PPE may be required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or listen. This position is
highly active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing.
The employee must be able to lift items up to 50 pounds.
The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands
and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision,
peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
