POSITION SUMMARY:

The selected candidate will be responsible for all new product development while providing expertise for mechanical design capabilities.  Product development projects will consist of major structural redesigns, design of new mechanisms including advanced controls and will span from the scope development phase to the post launch phase.  Additionally, selected candidate will be responsible for Project Management team and all associated project management activities.  The role requires an experienced leader with a strong mechanical engineering background.  In addition, project management skills with a focus on cross-functional leadership is a necessity.  The functions of the job include researching, planning, organizing, and execution oversight of structural design aspects of engineering projects.  This individual will be responsible for working with the product management group and other engineering functions to assure that internal and external customer needs are met through new product launches. This position relies on excellent verbal, visual, and electronic communication skills to coordinate activities and identify resolution of issues as they arise.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS INCLUDE:

  • Work with product management to maintain and prioritize a list of development projects in order to improve customer value and achieve new product revenue targets.
  • Manage a team of mechanical development engineers and designers to assure that the PDP is properly executed by producing accurate and timely outputs such as product designs, drawings, BOMs, specifications, validation data and product manuals.
  • Act as a “player coach” by mentoring development engineers to produce design outputs that meet project goals while providing support for critical path project tasks.
  • Monitor and track continuous improvement metrics in support of enterprise objectives related to “time to market”, quality and cost.
  • Manage a team of Project Managers to create detailed project plans in support of frequent cross-functional launch team meetings for the management of new product launch metrics
  • Develops and tracks project resource plans, including costs, timelines and performance goals.
  • Assure that designs adhere to industry quality and safety standards and that risk analysis documentation is maintained in support of these standards.
  • Supports the intellectual property process by providing necessary design and documentation information.
  • Assist with new supplier development efforts in conjunction with cost, quality or technology improvements that support new product metrics.
  • Assists with market analysis to define customer value, and project scopes which will result in differentiated, industry leading products.

 

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical engineering required, Master of Science degree would be given special consideration.
  • 7+ years of experience managing an engineering development group in a heavy equipment manufacturing environment by employing DFMA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly) to successfully launch new products.
  • 5+ years of experience using Pro-E, SolidWorks, or another CAD system is required.
  • Experience performing simulation analysis (i.e. FEA) of materials / structures, experience working with hydraulic / electro-mechanical components, or experience in the Mining Equipment or Heavy Construction Equipment Industries would be given special consideration.
  • The candidate must also have a proven track record of employing a product development process and project management skills to lead cross-functional teams in the execution and launch of new products.
  • The candidate should be able to exhibit strong problem-solving skills such as 6-Sigma or another structured methodology to solve complex problems.
  • It is important that candidates demonstrate work experience managing multiple projects and tasks in a “fast paced” work environment.
  • The candidate must have strong leadership skills and be results oriented. This person must be a strong communicator that is creative, yet believes in a structured approach to solving problems and meeting goals. 
  • The candidate must be a self-starter, work at a fast pace, and yet still be highly detailed and accurate.  They must show project management capabilities such as being goal-oriented while being able to identify high priority, critical path tasks.
