Container and Can-Making Tooling Development Engineer

General Function:   

This position has the responsibility to provide engineering assistance for the complete design and development of containers mainly for beverage industry, their corresponding metal-forming tooling (i.e., Cupper, Bodymaker, Necking Dies, Knockouts, Internal Base Reforming, Flanger and Bottle-Container-Manufacturing-System BCMS) and support R&D activities.  Experience in research, product development, physical testing, test data analysis, detailed design and analysis, bill of material creation and management, engineering change orders initiation and completion, creation and distribution of technical report, creation, and issuance of detailed engineering drawings, is strongly preferred in this role. The selected candidate must be available to travel domestically and internationally.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Maintain an effective working knowledge and awareness Belvac’s current documented Quality Management System as it pertains to their job assignments.
  • Collaborate with engineers and technical personnel in the R&D group to develop new metal container products, enhance current product designs and design corresponding metal-forming tooling.
  • Creation of engineering drawings for containers and related metal-forming tooling using AutoDesk Inventor Professional.
  • Value Engineering of designs to achieve cost targets while maintaining/improving function.
  • Creation of Bills of Materials, initiation, and completion of Engineering Change Orders as necessary to address issues with tooling designs and/or drawings.
  • Support Purchasing and Production Control by addressing inquiries related to tooling design related items.
  • Support the building and commissioning of new machinery by addressing inquiries from Fabrication/Assembly related to tooling design related items.
  • Support the development and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures for New Container & Tooling Development and Testing, including the use of statistical tools for analyzing testing results and designing experiments.
  • Provide technical support to global customers to help resolve plant-related production issues.
  • Support the Belvac Integration team designing containers and providing technical documentation that will be used to prepare quotations for customers.
  • Develop and drive the maintenance of appropriate standard project and product documentation like risk assessments, technical reports, and other required engineering documentation.
  • Ensure that the R&D lab works to appropriate ANSI standards and maintains documentation in accordance with ISO 9001-2015 requirements.
  • Assist the R&D department running tooling trials and forming preforms into containers, bottles, or other product types.
  • Assist in the continuous process improvement of Belvac’s product line.
  • Work on special engineering projects assigned by the Department Manager.
  • Other duties as required and defined by the reporting manager.

 

Education

BS or higher degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy or Technical related field.

 

 

Skill and Experience

 

Required

 

  • Provide engineering assistance for the complete design and development of containers mainly for the beverage industry, their corresponding metal-forming tooling (i.e., Cupper, Bodymaker, Necking Dies, Knockouts, Internal Base Reforming and Flanger) and support R&D activities.
  • Mechanical engineering and design, both problem solving solutions and 3D Solid modeling software.
  • Modeling and virtual simulation methods to solve technical problems related to metal containers performance.
  • Generation of Computational Fluid Dynamics modeling.
  • Verification and validation of simulation models through physical testing.
  • Apply statistical analysis techniques to trial data and develop key observations and conclusions.
  • Develop, write, implement, submit and /or present various technical reports in support to new product/tooling development, process improvement or productivity initiatives.
  • Work well under demanding timelines and pressure situations to meet customer requirements.
  • Work with shop fabrication methods and techniques and understand OSHA safety standards.
  • Assist assembly department during machine buyoff  identifying tooling and/or setup challenges to assure timely resolution of encountered technical issues.
  • Assist sales during machine commissioning at customer plants.
  • Create and revise product and tooling drawings using the Autodesk applications (Inventor and Vault).
  • Document changes to engineering records and specification documents in accordance with established procedures (Change Order).
  • Provide Sales department quotations for Container Engineering Services (i.e., Internal Base Reforming tests)
  • Provide assistance to the Technical Service department with inquiries about the tooling setup and metal-forming processes at customer plants.

 

 

Desired

  • Experience in Can-Making tooling design (Cupper, Bodymaker, Necker, Flanger, Reformer).
  • Experience in the use of Quality and Engineering Tools like FMEA, Root Cause Analysis and Statistical Process Control, among others.
  • Familiar with operating common machine shop tools such as lathe, mill, band saw, etc., experience in CNC machining and programing is a strong plus.
