General Function:              

Overall responsibility for New Product Development, from significant product extensions (more than $5 M in potential revenue) to Blue Ocean concept development-proposals within Rigid packaging container concepts and equipment that support the same

  • Responsible for broad technical oversight of engineering development resources


Primary Responsibilities

  • Supervise administration and technical aspects of direct reports, managing performance by providing timely feedback and following the annual appraisal cycle.
  • Assign and prioritize resources to ensure that the highest priority projects are completed with excellence and on time.
  • Completion of “DISRUPTIVE” concepts specifically intended to take the company in alternative design and product
  • Work and engage with outside engineering & development resources to complete the in process development projects through design, test and commercial trial
  • Engage and develop direct reports through the preparation and execution of performance improvement and career development plans as appropriate.
  • Drive and provide leadership in the improvement, execution and maintenance of a Phase Gate Development and Technical Review Process for Specialty Products.
  • Lead the Mechanical Design, Engineering, Testing and Commercialization of Specialty Products, including the implementation of new product features, equipment performance improvement and value engineering.
  • Oversight and direction to new container development projects by directing the Container & Tooling R&D team.
  • Responsible for ensuring that product changes are addressed in a timely manner for Specialty Equipment and coordinates the same with Vice President Global Brand Development and Service to meet customer requirements.
  • Support Specialty Product sales efforts by ensuring the team provides in a timely manner resource estimates for the preparation of customer proposals, and machine configurations for new equipment RFQs.
  • Transition Plastic Container and Bottle Can Machine Systems engineering to Standard Products Engineering function
  • Proactively identify new IP opportunities and recommend if a filing of new patent application is appropriate.
  • Manage all IP information, documentation, and processes with both internal and external resources to ensure Belvac’s IP protection.
  • Monitor of competitors and advances in the industry through the continuous tracking of publications, patents and other intelligence sources.
  • Drive the development and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures for New Equipment Development and Testing, including the use of statistical tools for analyzing testing results and designing experiments.
  • Control department expenses and capital within agreed limits and budgets, following company policies and procedures. 
  • Coordinate department efforts to maintain ISO 9001 Registration and other company programs. 
  • In collaboration with the Global Standardization and Documentation team, support the development and control of technical documentation for Branded Products with respect to ISO 9001.
  • Keeper of Company-wide STAGE GATE procedures to justify new product initiatives and maintain documentation to support the same.
  • Budget responsibility for all Product Development efforts in a range of $5m to $10M per year
  • Create workable Matrix organization with sharing resources as required with Standard Product Engineering
  • Other duties as required and defined by President


Skills & Experience


  • 15+ years of industrial design experience
  • 10+ years in a Product Engineering Development role with experience in design and commercialization of new equipment, preferably high-speed rotary machinery for rigid containers
  • Experience in the use of Quality and Engineering Tools like FMEA, Root Cause Analysis and Statistical Process Control, among others
  • Experience with Stage Gate Development and Technical Review Processes
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Proven leadership skills in driving and managing projects and cross functional teams
  • 5+ years of experience in managing technical staff


  • Proficient in Solid Modeling - Preferably Autodesk Inventor 2011 (or later) or Equivalent Solid Model Package (e.g. Solid Works)
  • Familiarity with Electromagnetic process applications in a production environment
  • Familiar with Finite Element Analysis and other computer modeling tools
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001
  • Familiar with industry design drafting standards such as ANSI Y14.5 (1994 or later)
  • Knowledge of CE (European Safety Standards).
  • Knowledge and / or experience in rigid container processing equipment.



  • MS or higher degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Software Engineering or Technical related field
