POSITION TITLE: Design Engineer, Senior

EXEMPTION STATUS: Salaried Exempt

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Lead Engineer or Director of New Product Development

 

 

SUMMARY:

Responsible for managing new product and technology development through active participation in satisfying internal and external customer expectations. Responsible for VOC, design, and implementation of new products and technologies, support modifications to existing products, change management, and monitoring of customer field service problems related to new product launch.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS INCLUDE:

  1. Participate as a leader in the research and development of new products or technologies for the automotive maintenance industry and other related products as deemed necessary.
  2. Develop customer design/function requirements data file through continuous examination of VOC.
  3. Develop new products to competitively meet current and future customer requirements with global platform mentality.
  4. Develop new technologies to competitively meet current and future customer requirements with a global platform mentality.
  5. Bring new products from design to market in a minimal time frame at the optimal cost. Must be able to manage multiple projects, objectives, and deadlines concurrently.
  6. Responsible for ensuring the reliability of new products/technologies within their respective environment and lifetime. Facilitate resolution to field problems as related to new product launch.
  7. Support value-engineering efforts by the Product Engineering group and incorporate those new ideas into future designs.
  8. Investigates current and new technologies relative to our industry that may impact future product development or enhance our current products.
  9. Must cultivate a mentoring environment within the Engineering department to develop our less experienced engineers in advanced methods and processes.
  10. Must adhere to established engineering procedures for the design, test, and analysis of products to carry out validation testing of designs. This is to ensure continuous improvements in product reliability.  Design, test, and validate lifts to applicable standards including ANSI, and EN (CE).
  11. Ethics & Work Standards: Maintain the highest ethical and work standards, while promoting the same attributes in co-workers and others. Ensure that all business activities - with both internal and external customers - be performed with a professional demeanor and that all participants be held accountable to this high standard.

Advises supervisor of concerns, problems, and progress of work in a timely manner. MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS INCLUDE:

  1. Coordinate, track and prioritize product related change orders and change requests as related to new product launch.
  2. Perform other related duties as required.

 

CONTACTS (Internal and External):

Heavy contact with design personnel, Operations, Marketing, Sales, documentation personnel, customer service representatives, and quality functions. Customer interface will include written, phone, and on-site visitation. Moderate telephone, letter, e-mail or personal contact outside of the company with vendors and suppliers.

 

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

Education: Minimum of a B.S. degree in an Engineering discipline is required.  P.E. license a plus.

Abilities: Must be able to work independently, as a team leader or as a team member to develop existing, or new products in a timely manner, and supervise the work of others. Must have the ability to manage new technologies and their implementation into specific products. Must demonstrate strong project management ability with evidence of effective use of a product design process, and or strong leadership ability.  Requires a thorough understanding of hydraulics, motor/pump specification, metal fabrication techniques, varied metallic and nonmetallic processes, the strength of materials, CADS, and high volume manufacturing design requirements.

Experience: Minimum of 7 years company experience or equivalent experience in a progressive, customer-oriented environment involved in the R&D of new technologies and their implementation into new products. Experience in metal fabrication, hydraulic motion controls, PID control loops, sensors, actuators, etc. desired.

Supervision: Works under the general supervision of the respective Engineering Mgr.

Responsibility: Exercise a substantially high degree of judgment while adhering to current design procedures. Work as chairman and supporter in various team-related design efforts. Identify, communicate, and overcome roadblocks to project critical path tasks. The general results and effectiveness of assigned projects and responsibilities are subject to examination and review.  Questionable matters affecting the overall unit operation or situations affecting other operations referred to Supervisor.
