Position Summary:  Accountable to the VP for all product engineering matters related to the Director’s assigned business.  Leads a team of engineers and other technical team members in the activity of new product introduction and product line maintenance to deliver planned revenue and margin growth.  Possessing demonstrated strong leadership skills, exceptional technical and problem-solving capability, the Director participates in establishing business vision and direction and then translates this direction into products using a process consistent with Warn Automotive’s core values.  Leadership must energetic and enthusiastic as a coach to accomplish team objectives through team leadership and team member development.


Location preference is Milwaukie Oregon (Warn HQ)  


Possibilty of being Michigan based with travel as neccesary to Oregon 




Essential Job Functions Include:

  • Facilitates and manages the Engineering Change Request (ECR) process and coordinates the Change Review board.  Assigns ECRs to cognizant engineer, managing timely completion and resolution.
  • Leading and support team in the use of industry best practice product development tools including:
    1. Customer specific product development tools
    2. Design Review By Failure Mode (DRBFM) + Design Review By Test Results (DRBTR) 
    3. Design Failure Modes Effects Analysis (DFMEA) + Design Validation Prove out & Reporting (DVP&R)
    4. Risk Analysis per customer and/or IATF required approach
    5. Application of Design Lifecycle product development approach
    6. Ideation and Innovation techniques with a group and/or customer
    7. Prescriptive problem-solving tools use and activity leading including Fishbone, Three legged 5 Why, 8D application, and Design Of Experiments
    8. Application of IATF requirements to the product development and change control process
    9. Alignment and support of the Warn Automotive Phase Gate & Customer Specific release process (APQP)
  • Creation of Engineering Design and Development (ED&D) costs model based on design work to application of customer specific applications, supporting budgeting and quoting effort.
  • Coordination of new technology implementation from Research and Development into customer applications, specifically through input on risks, benefits, and integration of proposed new technology to the specific market applications. 
  • Creation and updating of engineering policy in alignment with industry best practices, customer requirements and IATF 16949 requirements. 
  • Responsible for maintaining a solid knowledge of pertinent technologies, competitor activities, and products.
  • Completes regular reviews of customer concerns, warranty issues, and consistently drives programs and designs to reduce both.
  • Develop and maintain budgets for the Engineering Team.  Estimates personnel needs, software-based tool needs, schedules and work planning to meet customer requirements and deliverables.
  • Participates in ongoing strategic planning at the business level and coordinates Engineering Team business planning to ensure support of the overall strategic plan.
  • Recruits, develops, and delivers talented team members through development to provide personal growth and enhance team capabilities to highest level of performance results.
  • Manages team in a manner that supports a positive work environment for all team members; communicates pertinent information through team meetings, project reviews, etc.
  • Accountable for Sarbanes-Oxley compliance in assigned area.  Responsible for design and operating effectiveness of internal controls, including a self-assessment and report to management.
  • Travels up to 20% as required, typically between Portland and Detroit, with some international

Education and/or Experience:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering required.  Master’s degree in engineering or Business highly desired.
  • Eight or more years of experience in product design and development encompassing all phases from concept realization through prototype build, evaluation, and volume production implementation.
  • Eight or more years of experience in providing direct or project leadership for engineers and/or other technically skilled individuals.
  • Three or more years of experience with automotive major OEM or After-Market customers.  Completion of development projects and launches.  Incremental OEM experience a plus.


Required Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:


  • Strong oral and written communication skills necessary to communicate clearly and effectively with internal and external customers.  Ability to present information in a manner designed to educate or inform other team members and customers in one-on-one or group interaction.
  • Knowledge of the typical design input quality tools, e.g. DBRFM, DRBTR, QFD, Design FMEA, DFA/M, VA/VE.  Ability to perform Return on Investment (ROI) analysis.  General understanding of sources of variation and the effect of variation on sample populations.  Must have strong mathematical skills equivalent to those required under education and/or experience.
  • Experience with management and maintenance of product configuration management.  3 years of experience with commercial grade PLM and ERP systems
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, internet, and computer-aided design and drafting.  Thorough familiarity with a wide variety of manufacturing processes including prototyping and rapid prototyping techniques.
  • Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills including ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced work environment while maintaining a calm, rational and respectful demeanor.
  • Strong technical, troubleshooting, problem solving, research, organizational and analytical skills, combined with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet established deadlines through Sense of Urgency deployment.
  • Well-reasoned decision making with a high attention to detail regarding organization, planning, workflow, and project prioritization to ensure tasks are completed efficiently, accurately, and timely.
