Position Summary:  Working with minimal supervision, this position selects and applies standard engineering principles and procedures in the design and development of new product/production process or the modification of existing product/production processes.  Makes decisions on engineering problems and methods having an important effect on major company programs and customer’s needs.  Supports new product releases by designing and implementing new and/or modifications to tooling, fixtures, and machinery as required.  May be assigned to multiple large projects simultaneously.

Essential Job Functions Include:


  • Conduct engineering analysis of product design such as FEA, analytical math modeling, and GD&T analysis.
  • May be assigned project responsibility for projects involving tooling budgets up to $750,000 and potential annual sales of up to $10,000,000.
  • May coordinate multiple large projects simultaneously.
  • May work as project manager and help direct the efforts of designers, technicians or other team members to assure successful project completion.
  • Directs the efforts of drafters, designers, technicians or other team members to assure successful project completion.
  • Works with customer’s project engineers on technical details.
  • Facilitate customer meetings on a regular basis
  • May be assigned engineering maintenance responsibilities for major product lines.
  • Hands-on work on shop floor as job requires.
  • Travel to customer location and other VSG facilities.
  • Responsible for prompt and regular attendance as scheduled.
  • May participate in the Warn Automotive selection process as necessary.
  • Accountable for Sarbanes-Oxley compliance in assigned area. Responsible for design and operating effectiveness of internal controls, including a self-assessment and report to management.
  • Accountable for developing and monitoring processes and practices necessary for legal and ethical compliance in assigned area.
  • Problem-solve individually or as part of a group as job duties require.  Will lead such problem-solving activities.
  • Work safely and without injury.
  • Performs other various duties as may be assigned.

Availability Requirements:

Due to the nature and scope of the essential functions of this position, the importance of personal interactions with coworkers and employees, and the availability of job-related tools, equipment and resources at work, performance of the essential functions requires regular, consistent availability, accessibility, and presence on-site and after-hours. 


The required number of hours will vary depending on what is required to efficiently perform the job duties of this position.  This position will require availability and accessibility to respond to and address emergencies and critical situations outside of normal business operating hours in the early mornings, evenings and/or during weekends.


Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out of area travel may be expected.


Education and/or Experience:


  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Manufacturing or related Engineering discipline required.
  • Four to eight years of professional experience with project leadership responsibilities required.
  • Four to eight years of hands-on engineering or product design is required, including engineering and analysis.
  • Four or more years experience in a high volume, manufacturing environment is preferred.


Required Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:


  • Working knowledge of CAD programs – preferably Siemens NX.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Working knowledge of Quality Tools (SPC, GD&T, FMEA, DFA/M, 8D, 5Whys, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of engineering analysis tools like MathCad or MatLab.
  • Working knowledge of various rapid prototyping techniques preferred.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  •    Ability to work collaboratively and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, customers, visitors.
  •    Ability to effectively problem-solve.
  •    Excellent communication, interpersonal and customer service skills.
  •    Ability to facilitate activities necessary to a project’s completion.

Environment/Atmospheric Conditions:


The work environment conditions described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position.  This position’s job duties are performed generally in a shop or warehouse type environment.  Team members in this position may be exposed to loud noises from operating machinery, cold temperatures, chemicals and vapors, and possibly injury associated with work involving manufactured parts, assembly and heavy machinery.  The team member may also occasionally be required to work in an office environment with traditional office lighting and office furniture, as well as consistent and frequent noise, interruptions and other similar distractions.
