Position Summary:

 

The Layout Inspector - CMM Programmer will program, set up and operate CMM equipment in order to make complex, precise measurements of the requisite materials and parts. This position will support engineering, machinists and quality assurance personnel to trouble shoot, research and solve technical problems. This position will also prepare inspection reports indicating acceptable items, parts requiring corrective work, or unacceptable items requiring Quality Review actions. The Global goal for this role will be to support our corporate commitment to improve all products and processes through prevention rather than detection.

 

The Layout Inspector - CMM Programmer is responsible for performing visual and dimensional inspection on parts to determine their accuracy to specifications. This position will perform layout inspection of forgings, castings, machined components, templates, and tooling, using precision instruments.

 

This position reports to the Quality Manager and is located in Mt. Juliet, TN. This position requires the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with those in engineering, materials, operations, and quality, and to work and communicate across various levels of the company. There is no travel required for this position. 

 

Key Job Responsibilities included but not limited to:

  • Program and operate CMM equipment in order to make complex, precise measurements of materials and parts and lead implementation of this process into production environment.
  • Assist in the development of internal Quality controls such as control plans and inspection reports as well as the management and analysis of results for long-term quality trends.
  • Assist in the development of MSA and machine capability programs within plant to ensure gaging methods are robust and that machines are capable. This will lead to Statistical Process Control for long-term sustainability.
  • Assist in Implementing lean manufacturing processes in Quality arena such as gage control and organization, data visualization and analysis and other principles required to create focus on top issues. Attend Kaizen events to support lean initiatives within plant.
  • Assist Gage technician in in maintaining calibration of CMM equipment
  • Ensure weekly probe calibration and machine restart as a minimum
  • Ensure CMM’s have required probes and fixturing
  • Assist in PPAP process
  • Assist in training personnel in on CMM and other inspection techniques.
  • Perform layout inspection of forgings, castings, machined components, templates, and tooling, etc. using precision instruments.
  • Measure dimensions such as angles, arcs, and radii, using inspection equipment, such as surface plate, optical comparator, CMM, Height Gauge, gauge blocks, v-blocks, etc.
  • Work with engineering, machinists and quality assurance personnel to trouble shoot, research and solve technical problems
  • Conduct complete first piece inspection to assure process is correct before production run
  • Perform in-process inspection of parts as required to assure adherence to specifications and procedures.
  • Conduct final inspection of finished parts to confirm all operations have been completed to customer specification and assure that all required certifications and other documentation are in place for shipment.
  • Apply math and blueprint reading skills as required to perform day-to-day assignments.
  • Work from drawings, specifications and instructions.
  • Assist with Non-Conformance Reports (NCR) investigate cause and corrective action for defects by working with a team.
  • Complete and maintain quality documents and files including inspections, travelers, FAI, rework, etc.
  • Ensure any accident or injury is promptly reported.
  • Will promote and maintain a safe work environment and ensure compliance with all safety rules and Company policies.
  • Wear proper Personal Protection Equipment in work area at all time.

Job Requirements:

Experience:

  • Minimum 8 years of layout inspection experience strongly recommended.
  • Minimum 8 years in quality inspection environment working under a Quality Management System such as ISO 9001strongly recommended.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong understanding in technical drawing, 3-D model and blueprint reading/geometric tolerancing interpretation.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and symbols
  • Must have strong GD&T skills.
  • Operation of CMM's using software for programming.
  • Knowledge and use of precision measuring equipment to perform first article inspections. Instruments should include but not limited to micrometers, calipers, depth gauges indicators, and precision gauges.
  • Knowledge of quality processes & quality management system

Education and Certification Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred and will count toward experience
  • Technical certificate (CMM training certificate, Layout Inspector certificate, GD&T certificate and/or Blueprint certificate) a plus
