Job Title:        Lab Operations Manager

Location:        Richmond, VA

 

 

What we’re looking for:

 

We are seeking a dynamic and innovative Lab Operations Manager. This key position will be based in our Richmond, VA location reporting to the Director of Product Engineering. 

 

The Global Lab Leader will focus on maintaining and operating the test lab in Richmond, VA as well as coordinating and overseeing the other lab locations in Iowa and India. This manager will have the opportunity to collaborate with the leaders of Iowa and India labs, to drive standardization and optimization of all testing activity to ensure more consistent and reliable processes, procedures, and results. Thorough documentation and storage of all test reports and accompanying data are at utmost importance.

 

This role will be responsible for organizing the lab layout, tools, equipment, and inventory as required for optimum performance. Some duties include, performing lab asset management with storing specialized development hardware, maintaining instrument calibrations, servicing laboratory equipment, and managing equipment and asset database. The Global Lab Manager will collaborate with engineers on new equipment designs, installation, and operation. The ideal candidate has experience with planning, analyzing and communicating effectively lab related issues, and make recommendations for next steps in lab tools and infrastructure.

 

What you’ll be responsible for in this role:

 

  • Codes and regulations compliance: UL, DOE, NSF and others.
  • Maintain External Lab Certifications, while understanding the advantages of pursuing other certifications.
  • Planning and prioritization of projects in the lab.
  • Collaborate on the development of test plans (DVP) and FMEA with the engineers.
  • Design, prototyping, validation and implementation of new products.
  • Manage budget (expenses) and Capital (Capex) Plan.
  • Bring new test technologies, equipment measurement, fixtures, robots, etc. which can solve existing gaps in providing the right insights and measurements, allowing engineering teams to better understand gaps and improve the design.
  • Maintain control of lab and certification documents
  • Improve Lab facilities, driving 5S, visual and infrastructure improvements.
  • Testing – setting up, collecting and analyzing data of tests on components.
  • Development of new test methods with a good measurement system (MSE).
  • Reporting - writing or presenting lab reports for project managers and clients.
  • Lead - directs the efforts of engineers and technicians or other team members to assure successful project completion.  Will often be required to multitask and coordinate multiple large projects simultaneously.
  • Interface with customers, internally and externally, on technical details and project goals.
  • Hands-on work on shop floor, as job requires.
  • Implements policies, procedures, and best practices mandated for the laboratories to ensure compliance to ISO 17025 as well as other defined accreditation requirements for the designated laboratories.

 

What are the basic qualifications?

 

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
  • 10 years’ experience in a corporate or manufacturing environment.
  • 5 years of experience with compliance regulations. (e.g. UL, NSF, DOE)
  • 5 years of experience as a lab operations manager, calibration and development of test methods.
  • 3+ year experience leading and manager individuals with technical experiences

  • Must have strong mathematical knowledge, together with the use of complicated drawings, specifications, charts, tables, handbook formulas; all varieties of precision measuring instruments, personal computer and computer software applications involving a thorough skills knowledge plus the application of basic theory.
  • Ability to read, write, verbalize and comprehend instructions and correspondence at the highest levels in the English language.
  • ISO17025 standards knowledge
