We are seeking a dynamic and innovative Tool & Die Maker. This key position will be based in our new manufacturing operations located in Sylmar, CA, reporting to the Tool Room Manager. Must have own tools.

Job Summary:

Provide support for manufacturing by designing, making and repairing tools.  Assist engineering and maintenance by making prototypes, or equipment repair parts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Other duties may be assigned)

  • Daily check with supervisor for incoming work such as broken dies; continue with pending assignments as priority allows.
  • Design die from engineering drawings, sketches or verbal direction
  • Set up and operate conventional or CNC equipment to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes
  • Operation of all tool room equipment to make and repair dies.
  • Assist with prototypes from engineering department.
  • Select metals to be used from a range of metals and alloys, based on properties such as hardness and heat treatment properties
  • Study blueprints, sketches, models, or specifications to plan sequences of operations for fabricating tools, dies, or assemblies
  • Weld, measure, heat treat, etc. 

 

Key Competencies:

  • Knowledge of precision measuring tools, layout tools, hand & bench tools, metallurgy and heat treatment, advanced mathematics I.E.  Geometry and Trigonometry
  • Experience with engine lathes, mill machines, jig bore, surface grinders, and press operation.
  • Blue Print reading and familiarity with MasterCam, AutoCAD and Solid Works is essential.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • High School graduate. One year certificate in machine shop practice from a college or technical school (Machinist certificate); or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Requires 5 or more years of experience in Tool & Die shop environment after completion of an apprenticeship program. Knowledge of Jig and Fixture building, progressive dies and some CNC programing is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

(Computer skills, mathematical abilities, analytical or reasoning abilities, communication skills, other technical skills, etc.)

Requires:

  • Basic skills in Microsoft Office, Outlook and Internet Explorer. Basic shop math, Trigonometry
  • Experienced in Auto Cad, Solid Works and MasterCam design programs
  • Able to program HAAS CNC mill
  • Able to work from verbal direction, sketches and Tool Designs with minimal direction
