System Engineer

The Role

System engineering is a methodical interdisciplinary area of engineering and management that centers around the architecture, design and management of the systems, services and solution over their life cycles. The system engineer plays a vital role in the different dimensions of this area and works with all stakeholders to define the needs and system’s functionality throughout the entire lifecycle of a product or service, analysing data to improve solutions and increase productivity. A Systems Engineer works to balance various aspects of a system, most of them complex issues such as architecture and system dynamics. System engineering methodology includes a more general perspective and larger concern with organizations and customers essential objectives. At each stage of a process, the systems engineer is likely to ask both “how” and “why,” rather than just the “how.”

A Systems Engineer works with other industry professionals to meet the needs of both internal and external system customers and clients. A system engineer normally has an engineering background from one of the many fields, and as they gain expertise in the industry use their ability to conceptualize the big picture and advance to the position of Systems Engineer. Many holding a bachelor’s degree and advanced degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering or related engineering fields. Individuals with a firm, holistic understanding of both the operational and scope aspects of projects tend to excel in this position.

What you will do:

• Provide system and architecture leadership to the product development teams, facilitating architecture and design work with the product and services development teams ensuring product and solution coherence.
• Requirements management throughout the lifecycle of a products and systems, working with product marketing, customer service, supply chain, advanced manufacturing, customer service, engineering, other stakeholders, and peers to ensure requirements definition and alignment.
• Translate customer needs with product marketing and other stakeholders into prioritized product and services requirements and project charters.
• Lead the technical interdisciplinary and inter-module work, defining technical requirements and specifications, architecture, design, interfaces, and trade-offs
• Lead design reviews, reviewing the design as per the product development process and design review practices.
• Demonstrate the product design coverage vs. the desired product requirements and technical specification.
• Assess technical risk and lead risk mitigation plans.
• Work with product marketing and chief technologists to determine technology and module projects to support the product roadmap.
• Create and maintain the system technical roadmap.
• Participate and perform regular watch on standard bodes, industry standard, and industry trends and map it how it relates to business, product and technology.
• Travel, travel as needed with expected travel 4+ times per year, the position is global and travel will depend on projects and activities

What you need to have:

• 2+ years Systems Engineering experience or equivalent experience
• 5+ years as Engineering individual contributor.
• Bachelor of Science or Master’s degree.
• System Engineering experience

1. Analysis of needs, problems, determine operational concepts.
2. Requirements management, with identification of stakeholders and actors, development of needs, product requirements, functional requirements, performance requirements, technical requirements.
3. System and architecture, experience defining the holistic system architecture, with separation of concerns in to sub systems and clear interfaces.
4. Solutions and design, coordinated work with engineering teams to provide solutions and with stake holders to document and perform any trade-offs.

• Project management, Coordination and Governance experience:

1. Experience with project management, engineering team coordination using system and architectural descriptions and governing the architecture and design.
2. Broad technical knowledge: have a good ability to understand how various technologies works, how the technologies are used in context, which benefits as well as potential limitations, e.g.  microprocessors, electronics, mechanics, software, thermal analysis, critical tolerances, data communication, regulatory standards, safety, etc.

• Experience using quality tools and processes experience: DFMEA, PFMEA, Pareto, 5 Whys, etc
• Communicator: be able to effectively communicate with technical and non-technical profiles verbally and in writing.
