Position Summary: 

The Applications Engineer for DESTACO is responsible for providing customer application assistance, technical support, proposal drawings, quotations and special designs or modifications to existing products via phone or email including inside/outside sales and customer service. S/he may also be required to support the system design group and product development for new products, product improvements & changes to existing products. S/he would evaluate products, parts, or processes for cost efficiency and reliability. S/he would also be required to design a test setup for validation of products designed by NPD and application engineering. 

 

The Applications Engineer reports to the Manager, Applications Engineering and is located in Wheeling, IL and requires minimal travel (<5%).  This position requires the ability to work and to communicate globally and virtually with those in Sales, Product Engineering, Customer Service, Marketing and Manufacturing. 

 

Key Job Responsibilities included but not limited to:  

  • Promotes safety awareness with other members of the organization.  Promotes accident prevention and employee involvement in regard to a safe work environment.  

  • Supports the continuous improvement roadmap for the organization. Leverages continuous improvement tools to drive continued improvements.  

  • Provides customer application assistance and technical support for customer questions (by phone & email). 

  • Provides proposal drawings, quotations and special designs or modifications to existing products.  

  • Provides design of tooling solutions for automated systems.  

  • Creates detailed manufacturing drawings, 3D assembly models and CAD files.  

  • Generates bill of materials (BOM), product documentation and Oracle part numbers. 

  • Supports the system design group and product development for new products, product improvements and changes to existing products. 

  • Supports customer service with technical support, applications review, and warranty issues.  

  • Completes competitive product testing/analysis as required.  

  • May evaluate products, parts, or processes for cost efficiency and reliability. 

  • Sizing of AC, DC & Servo motor including gear reducer and able to put them together for a test setup and perform testing 

  • Develops test plans that translate the requirements into specific systems, applications, or project designs for large complex precision products such as Mechanical indexers, servo driven indexers, pick and place, robotic tools, and precision link conveyors 

  • Will work with production to evaluate needs to improve current testing methods and automate End of line testing wherever applicable. 

  • Utilize current processes for proper storage of engineering documents in global PDM.

Job Requirements:  

Experience:  

  • Requires 4-8 years of experience in the field or in a related area with mechanical design, discrete automation products, and assembly experience. 

  • PLC product awareness, programming, VFD experience is a plus 

  • Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the engineering field such as: APQP, FMEA, FEA, R&M, and 8D problem solving. 

  • Experience with administrating and executing project-related testing and documentation such as: Product Specification, FEA, DFMEA, DVP&R, DFM, Process Flow Diagrams, PFMEA, Product Run Trials, etc.

Education and Certification Qualifications: 

  • Associate degree required in a related field; Bachelor’s degree in engineering preferred 

 

Travel Requirements: 

  • Ability to travel <5% of the time
